CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Residency at Raymond Duncan Dance Research Center, Athens

K3 – Centre for Choreography | Tanzplan Hamburg (K3) provides a one-month residency to a Hamburg based choreographer to be spent at the Isadora & Raymond Duncan Dance Research Center (DDRC) in Athens, Greece.

The residency takes place in consulation with the artists availability either in the month of February, March or May 2025. It includes a scholarship, the use of rehearsal space at DDRC as well as the possibility to take part in their programme of DDRC and connect to the local dance scene. The residency is aimed towards a choreographer who is at the beginning of their career and is in an early stage of piece development.

Parallel to their research field, the resident artist is invited to a process of self-reflection, observation and commitment towards environmental action investigating the history, topology and ethics of DDRC. How can environmental awareness be reflected and inform the relationship between the participating institutions and artists? The DDRC also has a (herb, flower and vegetable) garden, that can be visited and used as part of the project. Project proposals that circle around those topics are welcomed but not mandatory.

About the institutions

Founded in 1980 by the Municipality of Byronas, the Isadora & Raymond Duncan Dance Research Center (DDRC) is housed in a unique building of historic and architectural value, designed and built in 1903 by Isadora Duncan’s brother Raymond Duncan. DDRC, an international dance research and residency centre, is in a constant process of reshaping its practices in interdependence with the site’s history, architecture and landscape, the resonance of the Duncans’ legacy on one hand and the changing needs of the dance community, on the other. Melding dance practice with theory and research provides space for inspiration, experimentation and creativity to artists of the Greek and international dance community. The structure and the position of the house, and the way it operates, aim in creating a sense of home for the artist. Through the projects it initiates, DDRC opens spaces of encounter between dance, scientific disciplines and practices of craftwork, care, commons and frugal living, notions that Raymond Duncan experimented with throughout his life. These projects, together with the microscale of the structure, are at the core of DDRC’s role and identity. DDRC is a founding member of the European Dance Development Νetwork (EDN).

The programme of K3 – Centre for Choreography | Tanzplan Hamburg focuses on artistic residencies that combine artistic research and production, classes and training for dance professionals and dance enthusiasts, as well as a wide range of dance performances for young audiences.
