BLACK DANCE CULTURE – AN INTRODUCTION TO HIP HOP CULTURE AND HOUSE DANCE

The intensive course, led by Gifty Lartey, offers a nuanced introduction to the dance forms of hip hop and house. A lecture will first explore the origins, history and cultural contexts of hip hop and house dance as part of Black dance cultures. Particular emphasis is placed on the precise identification of the styles, as well as a critical examination of umbrella terms such as ‘urban dance’, which often obscure the different dance forms and their origins. This is followed by a practical House dance session.
