ALL ON STAGE – INSIGHTS INTO COMMUNITY DANCE PROJECTS

Patricia Carolin Mai’s dance productions are characterised by intergenerational and, wherever possible, cross-contextual collaborations with people from the city who are interested in movement. Since 2018, the choreographer has been using her production resources to explore the accessibility of dance through rehearsal and performance processes. In May 2025, Patricia Carolin Mai founded the Mai:Company, thereby consolidating the work she began over eight years ago with and for people from the city. In the VHS course All On Stage, Patricia Carolin Mai presents movement approaches and principles from her dance productions and explores them with the participants. What potential for dance and communication lies in the transitions from one physical state to the next – in the fleeting and transformative moment in between? How do I make decisions individually and as part of a group? How do I relate to other bodies and the space? Whether sitting, lying down or standing, moving slowly or quickly, using the whole body or individual body parts – All On Stage!

Patricia Carolin Mai

Patricia Carolin Mai is a dancer, choreographer and artistic director of MAI:COMPANY. She studied dance at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and performance studies at the University of Hamburg. Since 2015, she has been producing dance pieces at Kampnagel and K3 | Tanzplan Hamburg, which have been performed internationally in countries including Belgium, France, Italy, Israel and Korea. Her artistic work in intergenerational and participatory contexts explores movement as a somatic and empowering practice and examines bodies in extreme states. Since 2019, she has been conducting research on soft skills in dance education as part of the EU project ‘Empowering Dance’ and works as a lecturer and mentor both in Germany and abroad. In 2025, she founded MAI:COMPANY – Hamburg’s first cross-generational dance company. From 2026 to 2028, she is deepening her work on community, participation and physical diversity with MAI:COMPANY as part of the City-State-Federal project ‘An Artistic Practice of Expansion’.
