House of Brownies: Queerdom: Vogue Night

Ballroom Culture is a movement of the US queer scene that developed from the original drag balls (= travesty shows) in New York City in the 1960s and 70s. The first drag balls took place in the Harlem district of New York in the late 19th century. Already in the first decades of the 20th century, they enjoyed increasing popularity in many major American cities, which continues to this day. Due to increasing conservatism during and after World War 2, these original drag balls were banned, but the queer underground scene continued to hold gatherings of this kind in private spaces, giving rise to Ballroom Culture in the late 1960s.
