Gloria Höckner
RESEARCH LAB - IN THE FACE OF THE GAZE
2G event (vaccinated/recovered)
Gloria Höckner (they/them) is inviting to a research lab into the dance studio at K3 - Centre for choreography at Kampnagel Hamburg where they are in residency right now.
The lab aims to research on the gaze and power structures that it can holde. It is part of Gloria’s project Sentimental Bits - This Magic Is In Spite Of Me that they develop within the residency at K3. Sentimental Bits researches on surveillance technology that tracks emotions from facial expressions, and ways of subverting them.
What is the lab about?
The lab addresses the „invisible“ gaze of surveillance technology as a human-machine gaze; Through a movement and body based research we will explore the machine’s gaze as well as the human’s gaze and touch upon questions like: What kind of gaze is directed upon the human body through emotion detection AI (artificial intelligence that tracks emotions)? How can the body emancipate from the (male, western) gaze? How can we direct the gaze and appear in it in our own terms? How can we invite the gaze to touch us or reject it? How can the body become invisible for tracking systems or distract them? In the face of the gaze we can reveille ourselves, we can act out aspects of ourselves that we do not explore if we are alone.
Format
I will provide research frames and questions and will open them up to the participants, so we can together explore them. The structure of the day will also leave space for things that might come up through the group.
Who can participate?
People who already have a movement or performance background (movers, dancers, performing artists f.e.) and are interested in a research situation and/or in the topic.

Gloria Höckner
(they/them) deals with the relationship of the body to technology and power-structures. They explores the principle of hacking and the potential of glitch - disturbances in the system. Gloria's pieces have been performed at festivals such as Performing Arts Festival Berlin, Balance Club / Culture Festival Leipzig, and Out Now! Bremen. After studying Theatre, Film and Media and Performance Studies, Gloria was invited to residencies at Seoul Dance Center, K3 (Limited Edition) and Nave in Santiago de Chile.
As part of a transdisciplinary research process during the residency at K3, which links digital and analogue practices, Gloria appropriates surveillance technologies and systems that use ‘artificial intelligence’ to ‘recognise’ human emotions in order to develop alternative bodies, images and narratives. Their research touches upon questions of self-determination about one‘s own body and the data that is produced by it.
