About K3
Tanzplan Deutschland
The Kulturstiftung des Bundes (the Federal Cultural Foundation) has set-up Tanzplan Germany as a five year long project, which will strengthen the structural conditions of dance as an independent artistic genre. In addition to professional development the particular focus of this project lies in the programme ‘Tanzplan vor Ort’ (‘Tanzplan Local’): as part of a call for ideas in 2005, every German city was invited to apply for funding on the condition that the particular council or county matched the amount awarded by the Federal Cultural Foundation. In January 2006 nine cities were selected to realise their projects between 2006 and 2010. These projects emphasise a wide range of aspects such as professional dance training, project model on dance in schools as well as supporting artists (for example with residency programmes). The nine ‘Tanzplan Local’ cities are: Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt a.M., München, Potsdam and Hamburg.
Tanzplan Hamburg
The aim of Tanzplan Hamburg is to strengthen the position of contemporary dance in Hamburg. Tanzplan in Hamburg was devised and developed by the dance journalist Edith Boxberger and the dramaturg Kerstin Evert and focuses on the areas of qualification and promotion. It is also designed to improve production possibilities for people who work in the dance genre. At the same time Tanzplan Hamburg aims to present contemporary dance as an innovative artistic practice and a socially relevant artistic culture.
That is why Tanzplan Hamburg concentrates on two main areas:
The ‘K3 – Centre for Choreography/Tanzplan Hamburg’ is a new institution for contemporary dance with an independent artistic direction and is situated at Kampnagel. In summer 2007 the K3, previously used as a gallery and exhibition space by Kampnagel, is being rebuilt to include dance studios and seminar rooms.
The main concern of the centre is to promote contemporary dance in general, especially with reference to cultural education. It is also designed to support and promote young choreographers through its residency programme and to offer courses for dance professionals (professional training, workshops etc). K3 will co-operate with various regional and national partners. It will be a venue that functions as a training and rehearsal space as well as a performance and workshop space. As a venue for communication and discussion it will be open to everybody who is interested in dance.
In addition to this, the ‘Kulturbehörde der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg’ (the ‘Arts Council of Hamburg’) offers a yearly budget of €200.000 (from 2007/2008 until 2010/2011) for project development in the genre of dance, which is twice the amount that has recently been available.
‘Pilot phase’ since April 2007
The re-building of the K3 space into the Centre for Choreography as well as the pilot phase of Tanzplan Hamburg started in April 2007 when the first three choreographers came to Hamburg for their nine-month residencies in co-operation with the MA course in Performance Studies at the University of Hamburg. In November and December 2007 the three artists present their work, which was created in Hamburg, as part of K3. The first courses and workshops also started in April.
The building work was finished in October 2007. The Architects in charge are: Schoening+Spalt (www.schoeningspalt.com). The ‘K3 - Centre for Choreography / Tanzplan Hamburg’ now offers its full programme of artistic practice and theory with training sessions, seminars, workshops and discussions as well as our own projects and productions. A three day long festival (18 – 20 October 2007) supported by the ‘Kulturbehörde der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg’ (‘Arts Council of Hamburg’) and the ‘Hamburgischen Kulturstiftung’ (‘Foundation for Culture Hamburg’) marked the opening of the new centre and present its spaces and programmes.
Also, the ‘Dance Youth Club’ opened its doors as part of Tanzplan Hamburg.
With the year 2010, the initiative Tanzplan Germany of the Federal Cultural Foundation ended. Since the beginning of 2011 K3 - Zentrum für Choreographie | Tanzplan Hamburg is funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
